Most City Facilities Closed Monday

Longmont city government observes Presidents Day on Monday, February 20, as a holiday. The following facilities will be CLOSED: Civic Center, Service Center, Library, Senior Center, Museum, Youth Center, Development Services Center, and Waste Diversion Center. All recreation centers will be open normal hours. Trash and recycling will be collected one day late during the week. Public Invited to Discuss Downtown Alley Project

Two public information meetings are planned for downtown business and property owners to meet with the LDDA, the City and J-2 Contracting to discuss the alleyscape project construction schedule. The first meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, February 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce building located at 528 Main Street. The second meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 22 at 8 a.m. in the Public Meeting Room at the Safety and Justice Center, 225 Kimbark Street. Information letters were sent via regular mail to property owners on the east side of Main Street, earlier this week. See project updates at http://www.downtownlongmont.com.

Registration Begins for Fishing Program

Children 15 years and younger are invited to sign up early for the 9th annual Chick Clark Kids Fishing Program Spring Kickoff on Saturday, March 24, at Izaak Walton Park, 18 S. Sunset St. Parents must register their children prior to the event at 303-651-8446, beginning February 20. The day includes a free kids' fishing clinic, free hot dogs for all, and free fishing for kids. The clinic and fishing begin at 8 am. Parking is limited so car pooling is encouraged. The Chick Clark fishing program provides a special place for the youth of our community to catch fish, participate in fun outdoor activities during spring break, and have a place of their own to fish year round. The program is sponsored by the City of Longmont, Kid Fishing, Inc., Colorado Division of Parks and Wildlife, Longmont Breakfast Optimists, Bennett's Tackle Shop of Berthoud and other local business throughout the community.

Coffee with Council is Next Saturday

Longmont City Council is hosting an informal chat over coffee from 9 to 10 am this Saturday, February 25, at McDonald's in Walmart, 2285 Ken Pratt Blvd. At Coffee with Council, you can talk with two council members on any topic. Airport Master Plan Community Open House

The City of Longmont is in the process of updating its Airport Master Plan, a comprehensive study that describes plans for airport development. City staff and the master plan consultants will be on hand to discuss the environmental overview, financial planning and estimated capital improvement program costs, and the economic impact of the airport. The public is invited to provide feedback to City staff on these sections at an open house from 5 to 8 pm on Monday, February 27, at the Civic Center, 350 Kimbark Street. Down Payment Assistance for Longmont Residents

Funds are available for income- and asset-qualified homebuyers to purchase a first home anywhere in Boulder County outside Boulder city limits. A deferred loan or a low-interest loan for up to 8.5 percent of the home's purchase price (maximum $15,000) is available for down payment and closing costs. You're Invited to a Telephone Town Hall Meeting

At 7 pm on Thursday, February 16, the City of Longmont will host a telephone town hall meeting to ask residents' opinions on ideas proposed for the City's "Focus on Longmont" strategic plan update. The meeting will take place in the City Council Chambers, 350 Kimbark Street, and calls also will be made to all residents of Longmont. Library to Experience Some Service Interruptions

The Longmont Public Library will undergo a major software upgrade on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 14 and 15. There will be periods when automated systems will not function. Services that will be unavailable include catalog search, placing holds and reservations, renewals and check-ins, self-checkout, paying fines, online databases, accessing accounts online, telephone renewals, and email. Check-out at the Circulation Desk and computer lab services will be limited. Your understanding and patience will be appreciated.

Longmont to Plow Residential Streets on Saturday, Feb. 4

Beginning Saturday, Feb. 4, city crews will begin to make one pass through the residential streets. In order to plow one lane through the residential streets the snow crews will postpone clearing most trails and greenways over the weekend, but the work on trails and greenways will resume on Monday. The city crews will work with a contractor beginning early Saturday morning to clear snow from the downtown area. This will entail hauling snow from the core downtown section of the city. RTD Officials to Discuss FasTracks with City Council

RTD will provide an update to the joint City Council/TAB assembly on current costs with various options, allowing City Council and TAB to provide further policy direction on the RTD options on Wednesday, Wednesday, February 8 at 7 pm in the Safety and Justice Center, 225 Kimbark St. Over the past two months, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) has provided information to the entities along the NW Rail corridor on the recent cost increases requested the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railroad to construct the FasTracks project. The increases have raised the total project costs for NW Rail from just under $900 million a year ago to $1.7 billion (year of expenditure) in the 2012 cost estimates for FasTracks.

Oil & Gas Regulations Community Open House

The City of Longmont is in the process of updating regulations related to oil and gas development. Teen Dating Violence: Facing the Epidemic

In recognition of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, the Longmont Ending Violence Initiative will host a free special event for parents and teens at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, February 8, at the Longmont Public Library, 409 4th Avenue. The evening will feature a presentation by Kathy Robertson, whose daughter lost her life to dating violence. Topics include warning signs of abuse, how to talk to your teen about dating violence, local resources, and a Q & A session with experts.

Mandatory Contractor Orientation for Boulder County Residential EnergySmart

The first hour and a half of this session is for all contractors and will cover information regarding program design, implementation, reporting and work standards and how to get involved.

The second part of this session is for insulation and air-sealing contractors only and will provide in-depth information regarding insulation/air-sealing job standards and quality control measures.

Who Should Attend: This orientation / information session is mandatory for all contractors that want to receive leads from, or have work qualify for financing from, the Residential EnergySmart service. This includes insulation/air-sealing contractors, mechanical contractors, solar PV companies, window companies, plumbers, electricians and other home retrofit contractors.

Celebrate Chinese New Year

Free Landfill Day This Saturday

The City of Longmont is offering an opportunity for residents to take one load free of charge to the Front Range Landfill at 1830 Weld County Rd 5 in Erie from 6 am to 2 pm on Saturday, February 4. Apply for the Citizens Police Academy

The Longmont Police Department is accepting applications for its 12-week Citizens Police Academy, which begins Wednesday, February 29. The academy gives residents a better understanding of the role of law enforcement and our criminal justice system. Classes will be held at the Safety and Justice Center at 225 Kimbark Street on Wednesdays from 6 to 9 pm, February 29 through May 16. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and undergo a background check. Fire Department Provides Free Information

Many residents are receiving an invitation to a local restaurant to view a film on fire prevention. The Longmont Fire Department is not affiliated with this program. Any time you have questions about fire safety, your fire department is a free resource. You should also know that there is no substitute for smoke detectors. Serve Your Community as a Victim Advocate

The Longmont Police Department's Victim Services is looking for volunteer advocates to provide information, resources, and support to victims of crime and other traumatic events. Volunteers must be residents of Longmont, at least 21 years old, able to commit to one year of service, attend 40 hours of training, and have a valid driver's license and insurance. The Longmont Fire Department is seeking two or three volunteers to assist with the newly launched Business Self-Inspection Program. Volunteers are asked to contribute two to four hours a week, and the schedule is negotiable. Training is provided. Candidates must be detail oriented, have great interpersonal skills, and possess a valid Colorado driver's license and a good driving record. RTD Schedule Changes Beginning Next Sunday

There will be changes to four RTD routes in Longmont beginning Sunday, January 22. Route 323, a "local" route that runs from Twin Peaks Mall via Ken Pratt Blvd. to downtown and 8th & Coffman, the OUR Center, Salud Clinic, Skyline High School and 17th & Pace will change from service every 30 minutes to service every 60 minutes. Additionally, the "regional" bus routes serving Boulder, CU and Denver (the BOLT, J and L routes respectively) will no longer pick up passengers on Hover Street or 21st Avenue. These routes all will start passenger service at 23rd Avenue west of Main Street, with the regular bus stop pick-ups/drop-offs south of 23rd Avenue. RTD also will add a trial bus run from Lyons to Longmont in the morning and back to Lyons from Longmont in the evening. This new express bus route will be called the YL. Through Thursday, January 5, there are four satellite locations where you can drop off your Christmas tree to be recycled: Roosevelt Park - parking lot south of 8th Ave., Garden Acres Park - west side of parking lot off 18th Ave., Kanemoto Park - parking lot off of S. Pratt Pkwy., and Centennial Park - east parking lot off of Alpine St. Please remove all holiday decorations and lights. You also can recycle your tree at the Waste Diversion Center, 140 Martin St., during regular business hours: Monday through Wednesday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, and Thursday through Saturday, 8:30 am to 5:45 pm. Denver Nuggets Basketball Skill Challenge

Boys and girls age 7 to 14 are invited to showcase their talents in dribbling, passing and shooting at the free Denver Nuggets Basketball Skills Challenge at 1 pm on Saturday, January 7, at the Longmont Recreation Center, 310 Quail Road. Entry forms will be available at the Rec Center beginning at noon. Top scorers in each age group will advance to the sectional competition. City Holiday Closures for the New Year's Day Holiday

Longmont city government observes the New Year holiday on Monday, January 2. The following facilities will be CLOSED: Civic Center, Service Center, Development Services Center, Library, Senior Center, Museum, Youth Center, and Waste Diversion Center. Trash and recycling collection will be one day late during this week. If you have questions about the collection schedule, call 303-651-8416.

Recreation Holiday Schedules for the New Year's Holiday

2012 Cultural Event Grant

For the eighth year, the City will award Cultural Event Grants in 2012. Longmont organizations and individuals are eligible for a grant to support community celebrations of Longmont's vibrant cultural heritage. An information session will be held on Wednesday, January 4, from noon to 1 pm in the City Council Study Session Room at the Longmont Civic Center, 350 Kimbark Street. Grant applications must be received by the office of Community and Neighborhood Resources no later than Friday, January 13, 2012. Prepare to Serve on a City Board or Commission

The eight-week P.E.R.L. (People Engaged in Raising Leaders) training program is accepting participants for the 2012 session, which takes place on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 pm, January 24 through March 13. Through this program, people of color learn about the roles and responsibilities of boards and commissions in preparation for volunteering to serve. Apply Now for 2012 Student Exchange Program

Applications are available for Longmont Sister City Association's 2012 Student Exchange Program. Four chaperones and 16 student ambassadors will be selected for the exchange with sister cities Chino, Japan, and Ciudad Guzman, Mexico. You can pick up applications in the City Manager's Office at 350 Kimbark, or visit http://www.longmontsistercities.com. Chaperone applications are due in the City Manager's Office by 5 pm on Friday, January 6, and ambassador applications are due by 5 pm on Friday, January 20. RTD Schedule Changes Beginning in January

There will be changes to four RTD routes in Longmont beginning January 22. Route 323, a "local" route that runs from Twin Peaks Mall via Ken Pratt Blvd. to downtown and 8th & Coffman, the OUR Center, Salud Clinic, Skyline High School and 17th & Pace will go from service every 30 minutes to service every 60 minutes. Additionally, the "regional" bus routes serving Boulder, CU and Denver (the BOLT, J and L routes respectively) will no longer pick up passengers on Hover Street or 21st Avenue. These routes all will start passenger service at 23rd Avenue west of Main Street, with the regular bus stop pick-ups/drop-offs south of 23rd Avenue. RTD also will add a trial bus run from Lyons to Longmont in the morning and back to Lyons from Longmont in the evening. This new express bus route will be called the YL.
